Yeah so i'll be doing this once in a while, because of the dayjob related benefits (meaning going to screenings and premieres once in a while).
Yesterday i went to a Paramount presentation, where they showed exclusive footage of some of their biggest movies this year. And man, they got some heat coming up!
First up was a trailer reel, with highs and lows... Actually a lot of movies coming up are definetly not my thing. Dance flick by the Wayans bros. must have been the shittiest trailer i've seen in quite a while and i think the movie will be at the same 'level'. There is also a remake of Friday the 13th coming up, and it looks very generic. I'm not a big horror fan, but along with 2 other horror flicks (case 39 and the uninvited), i got the impression that horror needs a fresh new approach. I can't understand that you had movies like Rec and A l'interieur last year (didn't see them, but an avid horror fan couldn't stop talking 'bout them) and Hollywood is still shitting out Ringu/the Others -like clones.
But the bigget attractions came after that. First up, 25 minutes of Watchmen!
This could be the Dark Knight of '09.. For real... Shit looked amazing. I don't wanna spoil anything, just go see this movie! If you liked the visual style of 300 and like a more mature and deeper approach to comicbook/superhero storytelling, this is for you. Oh and it won't be some watered down version to take your kids to. Especially the character dr. Manhattan is one nasty SOB. He comes to the rescue at one point and simply makes the badguys explode in the middle of a crowded bar. Guts on the sealing, blood on bystanders faces. From what i've seen sofar, it's got everything i want in a comicbook flick. It looks like it's got the best elements from movies like V for Vendetta, Sin city and the Dark knight. Go see this.
Next up, footage from Star Trek:
Again, holy shit! this movie is massive. Huge sets, huge budget, huge ambitions. Everything that was bad about Star Trek the last couple of years is out the door. Everything you liked is still there. And if you never gave a fuck about Star Trek, this might be the movie to win you over. This ain't no nerdy, trekkies only movie. The characters are cool (again), there is comedy in there... Man it's hard to talk about this without spoiling... JJ Abrams is delivering the goods, Star Trek is back for years to come.
Last up, Monsters vs. Aliens, 3D. Nice Dreamworks animation flick. 3D is the next big thing, i saw Beowulf that way and that was incredible. This movie is probably gonna be alot of fun. Good jokes and big battles in 3d, this will also be a big one.
So to sum up, this is gonna another big movie year. Too bad they didn't have Transformers 2 footage. They DID have a rough G.I.JOE trailer, but i don't give a fuck about that movie, it's got that powerranger feel all over it. I would really be surprised if that movie turns out ok.
peace!!
